Uptown
Beat
Uptown Beat was formed in 2006. It originally included
Charis Ioannou on saxophones, Savvas Houvartas on guitar, Gabriel Karapatakis
on bass and Stelios Xidias on drums who was later replaced by Rodos
Panayiotou. The repertoire of the band is a fusion from different types
of music including straight funk rhythms from the seventies, classic rock
sounds as well as swinging rhythms from the North America
and Latin rhythms from the Central and South America.
The band members, all being Cypriot residents imply discretely and sometimes
not, their middle-eastern background on some of the tunes.
Listening to Uptown Beat one can appreciate the meticulous
sound Rodos can achieve on his drum set which can range from being gentle and
fragile to extremely virtuosic drum solos stemming from Brazilian rhythms.
Gabriel, who is constantly feeding Rodos with ideas, provides the solid bottom
on which the rest is built. His fat sound and groovy bass lines are
always in the style which is being implied and his solos always very tasty,
reminiscent of the great Marcus Miller. Savvas, apart from being a very
talented songwriter and composer, he is a solid guitar player with a very
mature sound. He always has endless ideas as how to incorporate his sound
in the rhythm section as well as a very unique improvising style which
demonstrates his rock background as well as the middle-eastern sound echoing
from his tunes. Last but not least, Charis lays on top of all this the melodies
of the tunes always in a lyrical style, and during the solo sections he
splashes notes in a dexterous way indicating his jazz background.
