THEODOSII SPASSOV 18/06/06
A
warm summer evening in Paradise.
The setting sun sends dappled light across the crowd, and illuminates
the backdrop to the stage. It is an idyllic atmosphere for Grammy
Award Winner Theodosii Spassov, his kaval and the fine musicians
that grace the stage with him.
His
music captivates, enthrals, drifts through Pomos as though it has
found it's home back in the fields of Bulgaria. Your mind recalls
the scene, a lonely shepherd playing the flute's floating melodies
to his flock. After sunset when Paradise's owners Socrates,
Andreas and family treat us to a fine dinner, we see another side
to Theodosi's music. For
not only a master of the kaval he shows us the extravagant possibilities
which that childhood instrument the Bontempi Mouth Organ can perform.
It's played with mischief, with fun but this is good fun, Theodosii
has a boyishishness about him, maybe he's reliving an old memory,
but now not as the boy rather the master. It is one of those
rare nights, one where the end should not be allowed to come, but
then music of this inventiveness and sheer quality will always
play on, long after the last note has died in our ears.
