9th Paradise Jazz Festival

Dear friends of Paradise Jazz Festival

No matter how hard somebody tries to hold life still, events will follow their way, they will go on their journey especially when it involves a lot of people together as in a Festival.  After a group comes back to their original beginning or starting point, back to their roots, they can start again a new journey. An unexpected trip and challenge for one more time. So being - helps the inner soul to reinvent itself so that the mind doesn’t go rusty.
This is how our festival comes back to the original venue, no big costs, no big sponsorships, just between friends and familiar faces.
Back on the small stage with unplugged sound, next to the bar, it is very intimate the way we like it.
In order to get as much inspiration as possible, we have moved the dates of the festival to the
25th, 26th and 27th July 2008, to make it easier for students, families and new friends to attend, many of whom have working and studying commitments.  July therefore seems to be the better period and more convenient, as most people have their holidays at this time.  We acknowledge that the last weekend of July is more appropriate for more people.... Anyway July’s sunsets are as good as September’s!
This year's festival is dedicated to Cypriot Musicians, their projects & their collaborations. It is an invitation to them, recognizing the progress they have made in the last years. We strongly believe that this will be a time for them to realise their potential and allow them to open their wings which in turn opens their minds to fly.
So, we are going to start
Friday 25th July, commencing at  8 p.m. with the Latin Jazz group ‘Trio Smileswho are well-known here at Paradise Place, featuring the Portuguese singer ‘Magda Mendes who stole the hearts of the crowd with her performance last year. Together they are going to take us for a trip from the ‘Fado’ of her country to the ‘Latin & Salsa’ sounds of Brazil. Stelios Papazoglou on guitar, Andreas Rodosthenous on electric bass and Rodos Panagiotou on drums and percussions.  A great way to open our Festival with a group who have already won the hearts of the patrons of ‘Paradise Place’

For Saturday the 26th of July again at  8 p.m we go on with Classic Jazz and a collection of musicians who are pushing the boundaries of Cypriot/Jazz music.  Whom have supported us and have achieved a way of keeping our Jazz music alive for which we sincerely thank them. To be followed by our upcoming devotees of the ‘Jazz trend’, who hopefully will follow in their footsteps to keep, Jazz an ongoing tradition for ‘Paradise Place, for many years to come.
Irinaeos Koullouras on acoustic bass, George Koulas on drums and George Krasides on sax and clarinet. With them will be Elizabeth Simonian and her spectacular voice.  Ofer Ganor acoustic guitarist who topped the charts with his magnificent performance, as experienced here at Paradise Place four years ago and is great to have him back.
Altogether this quintet will make ‘The Paradise Place Festival’ an unforgettable and absorbing experience.

Sunday 27th July commences at 7p.m. and is dedicated to more experimental forms, with Tat-Tnabar, a powerful percussion group with five talented professional performers from theatrical dance/music scene. This percussion team was put together by Lefteris Moshovias in year 2000 and has as a target to escape from the usual standard instruments using as a source of inspiration the African music history. They write music for theatre plays, movies and documentaries, with the use of household utensils and everyday appliances.  Their music has been ‘Theatre Awarded’ for the ‘Best Music’. Years 2005/2006- 2006/2007. Tat-Tnabar are well known in Cyprus and abroad as Freestyle Percussionists.

The ‘Three Day Music Celebration’ is going to finish with Andreas Georgiou Ethnic Jazz Trio” a musical journey in contemporary European jazz, with explicit Ethnic characteristics and impressionistic improvisation. The three artists – Andreas Georgiou on guitars, Gabriel Karapatakis on bass, and Rodos Panagiotou on drums and percussions - will present compositions by Andreas Georgiou, who is one of the most important personalities in European jazz, he has 9 personal CDs and collaborations with some of the greatest musicians worldwide ….
