Three
Musicians from different places meet in summer 2006, invited to perform together
at the „Paradise Place“ in Pomos, Cyprus. They get togheter, prepare a
repertoire in a short rehearsal including broadway songs, originals and arranged
xyfolk songs from their home countries, they get on stage, and the magic of
jazzmusic happens: the three different personalities with their histories and
influences melt into one musical statement, into one improvised journey of
sound. Inspired
by the performance, the three musicians decide to continue their collaboration
on a tour through cyprus in July 2007, exploring new material, getting the
arrangements more complex and discovering different musical
spheres.
Wellknown
Cypriot bassplayer Irenaoes
Koullouras,
brought up in a family of musicians, has studied at
Berklee College of Music , USA, and with world famous bassist Ron Carter. He’s
as familiar with traditional cypriot music as with contemporary jazz and his
strong pulse and powerfull sound made
him perform with artists
like Theodosii Spassov, Evagoras Karageorgis, Arturo Sandoval,
and many
others besides leading his own „North
and South Band“.
Koullouras is the root of groove and harmony, his solos rock.
Araxi
Karnusian,
Swiss tenorplayer with Armenian roots, has studied saxophone and composition at
the Musikhochschule Luzern“ and took lessons with Tony Malaby and Rich Perry in
NYC. Beside beeing busy performing all over Switzerland, she leeds her own
nonett including a string quartet, strange sounds – beautiful music“ and has
just released the duo-album, laut & luise: open that door“. Karnusian’s
unique, warm sound, her sense for dynamics, energy, and
improvisation-in-the-moment makes her the ideal „ frontline“ for the
trio.
Swiss
drummer Dominic Egli,
who studied with drum legend Billie Brooks at the „Swiss Jazz School Bern“ and
at the „ Drummers Collective“ in NYC, is member of the bands „matsup“
„jean-paul
brodbeck trio“ and „voices and co-leads the trio K:E:B. Besides recording
regularly, he has performed with artists like Andy Scherrer, Peter Frei, Malcolm
Braff, Rich Perry, Don Friedman and many others. His orchestrations, his
energetic and interactive playing let the trio take off to wherever the music
leads it to.
